Биллингс Уильям (Billings, William) (1746–1800), один из первых американских композиторов, родился 7 октября 1746 в Бостоне (шт. Массачусетс). Работал дубильщиком, руководил церковными хорами, сочинял хоровую музыку. Опубликовал шесть сборников духовных сочинений, получивших широкую известность; его гимн Честер (Chester) стал главной патриотической песней Американской революции. Он по праву считается отцом американской хоровой музыки.   Хоровое пение традиционно для некоторых протестанских религий. Биллингс оказал заметное влияние на духовную музыку Новой Англии:  его музыка была очень популярна в течение жизни, он ввел в обиход гимны, более светлые по характеру, чем традиционные, а также начал использовать музыкальное сопровождение при исполнении церковных гимнов.
Умер Биллингс в Бостоне 29 сентября 1800, в возрасте почти 54 лет. Он был женат и имел 6 детей.
